A Christmas tree was damaged by vandals on Cannon St, Kells, Co. Meath on the 12th December 2024 at approximately 1.00 am.

A photo of the broken Christmas was uploaded on Thursday by the committee of Kells Christmas Lights.  The Committee who collected donations to help decorate the town have appealed for anyone with information to come forward. They have also appealed to anyone with dash cam footage to come forward as well.

Kells Christmas Lights said the following on their social media page:

“If anyone who might have been in town at around 1am could check their dashcam footage it would be a great help. There is someone badly hurt today from a big fall maybe ask them what happened?”

“So, so much work has gone into these lights from the committee members and the whole town has paid for them. Please help us find whoever did this. HELP US BRING CHRISTMAS BACK.”

Kells Resident and Peace Commissioner Cormac Corr has also appealed for information in regard to the damage done to the Christmas and asked those responsible to “turn themselves in”.

Corr told Boyne News, “We must not let the actions of a few vandals overshadow the dedication of our Christmas Lights Committee, who have worked tirelessly to collect donations, organise the switch-on event, and decorate our town.”

“It is encouraging to hear that CCTV footage has captured this senseless act, and I trust those responsible will soon be brought to justice.”

“Kells is a proud community built on volunteerism and shared values. While the actions of a small few have let us down, they do not define us.”

“To those responsible: even now, after the shame you have brought upon yourself, there is an opportunity for redemption. Take responsibility for your actions. Turn yourself in, admit your wrongdoing, and offer a sincere apology - not just in words but through meaningful restitution.”

An Garda Síochána gave the following statement to Boyne News:

"Gardaí are investigating an incident of criminal damage where a Christmas Tree was on Cannon St, Kells, Co. Meath on the 12th December 2024 at approximately 1am."

"No arrests have been made."

"Investigations are ongoing."
